 Storytimes and Kaleidoscope

                                                                     
   Battle of the Books

     Battle of the Books is made up of teams from local elementary schools.  Books featured in the Battle are now available for checkout and are housed in a special location.  For 4th and 5th graders.  Meets take place at the library beginning in late January through March on weekdays at 4:00 or 4:30 p.m.   Young Adult Battle of the Books books are also available in Youth Services.  Copies of the Battle of the Books lists are available at the Youth Services desk.

     

 Martin Luther King Jr. Day AM Program Special: Bill Hooper

Monday, January 17: 11 am

   Enjoy original interactive music for children.  Accompanied by guitar, Mr. Hooper performs songs about music and motion, nature and feelings that resonate with young audiences. A fun show for all ages.  Seating is limited.  No tickets required.

                                                               

Martin Luther King Jr. Day PM Program Special: Magic for Muggles Monday, January 17: 1 pm

   Professor Presto’s Magic School: Magic for Muggles is a two-hour hands-on magic trick workshop for kids.  It teaches and supplies them with easy-to-do magic tricks.  Every child gets a magic wand, a “bag of tricks”, and a Certificate of Wizardry. For age 7 & up.  Registration begins Saturday, January 8. 

            

There’s Snow Business Like Show Business

Tuesday, January 18: 10:30 am or 1:30 pm;

Wednesday, January 19: 10:30 am, 1:30 pm or 7pm;

Thursday, January 20: 10 am

    Snow joke!  Mrs. M. and Mrs. C. are putting on a puppet show with songs and skits.

This is to promote the winter Storytime classes which start the following week.   For all ages.  No tickets required.

Babysitting Training Course

Saturday, January 29, & Sunday, January 30: 1 - 5 pm

   This class is for ages 10-16 and is taught by a certified teacher.  Fun activities, small group discussions, role-playing, and teacher-led discussions allow students to actively participate in class.  A nonrefundable fee of $5.00 will be due at registration to cover a student reference book, along with other resource materials.  Bring a snack and a doll to class. This 8 hour class is limited to 25 participants.   Registration begins Saturday, January 15.

 

Preschool Fair

Thursday, February 3: 7 - 8:30 pm

     Need help in choosing the right school for your child?  Come to our annual Preschool Fair.  We have scheduled this program in advance of local preschool registration periods.  Representatives from local nursery school/day care centers will be here to help you choose the best program for your child.  No registration necessary.

 

Winter Reading Program

February 5 – March 25

    Youth Services’ Winter Reading Program is co-sponsored by the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team. For every 30 minutes that you read, you will receive a raffle ticket.  Weekly raffles will be held for Wolves prizes. For pre-school & up.

   Once again we have an extra incentive for signing up early.  Everyone who signs up on opening day will be eligible for a special raffle.  The raffle drawing is at 4:00 p.m.

 

Character Counts

Sunday, February 6: 2 pm

   Character counts in Elk Grove Village!  We are inviting you to a special program with stories and crafts.  For Families.  Registration begins Saturday, January 22.

 

Valentine's Day Drop-in-Craft  

Saturday, February 12: 10 am - 4 pm

     Drop into Youth Services to do a valentine craft.  Although you may come at your convenience, please register so that we can be sure to have sufficient supplies. For preschool & up. Registration begins January 29.

 

       Stranger Danger Seminar

Saturday, February 19:  2 pm

  This program will be presented by Dustin Kook and J. R. Hudson of the National Karate Schools of Chicago.  There will also be a special guest from the Elk Grove Village Police Department. For ages.4-12; parents are welcome.  No registration necessary.

 

President’s Day Program Special  - Animal Encounters with Dr. Robert James

  Monday, February 21: 11 am or 1:30 pm

   A zoologist, teacher, and author, Dr. James brings live animals such as a porcupine, armadillo, alligator, ostrich, etc. Everyone may touch the animals as he walks among the audience.  For all ages but preschoolers/K must be accompanied by a parent.

Seating in Kids Korner is limited: No tickets are required.

 

 

Chicago Wolves Player Visit

Tuesday, February 22:  7 pm – 8 pm

   Wolves center Cory Larose will give a talk, sign autographs, and show a Wolves uniform.  No registration necessary.

 

 Spring Fling – Bunny Hop and Hat Parade  

Tuesday, March 22: 10:30 am or 1:30 pm    

Wednesday, March 23: 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, or 7 pm

Thursday, March 24: 10 am

     The Spring Fling Parties are special events for preschoolers/kindergartners of Elk Grove.  These parties include seasonal stories, fingerplays, and a puppet show.  Hats are created at home out of paper plates, etc., and we parade around the library showing off our fancy hats.  Also, Spring Bunny will make an appearance.

      No tickets necessary but instructions for making a spring bonnet to wear to the party will be available beginning Saturday, March 5.

     *No Book Babies or Lapsit on Monday, March 21.

    

Spring Break: Illinois Wisconsin Search & Rescue Dogs: Lost in the Woods

 Monday: March 28: 11 am or 1 pm

      Patti Gibson of Illinois Wisconsin Search & Rescue Dogs will present: LOST...But Found, Safe and Sound, a program developed by the Association of National Park Rangers, Inc. It is a program for children on how not to get lost, how to stay comfortable if they do get lost, and how they can be found more quickly. There will be a video presentation and handout for parents.  Patti will also be accompanied by her two bloodhounds; both are trained Search and Rescue Dogs.   For all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by a parent.  No registration necessary.  

 Spring Break:  Mark Hayward: Champion Yo-Yo Hijinks

 Wednesday, March 30: 11 am

     World Yo-Yo Champion Mark Hayward does amazing yo-yo tricks, wacky juggling routines, top spinning, and assorted tricks (some that include using perhaps the world’s largest mousetrap.) Enjoy seeing famous yo-yo tricks like Atom Smasher, Brain Twister, Walk the Dog, and Rock the Baby. For kids and adults of all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by a parent.  Seating is limited.  No tickets required.

 

Movie - The Incredibles

Thursday, March 31: 10 am

     Youth Services will be showing  the Incredibles.  For all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by a parent.  Check at the Youth Services Desk for details.  No tickets required.

 

National Poetry Month Program: Justin Roberts: Song Writing Workshop

Thursday, April 7:  7-8:30 pm

     Singer/Songwriter Justin Roberts (a 2-time Parents Choice Gold Award winner) and classically trained multi-instrumentalist Liam Davis will work with small groups of students to help them through writing a verse to a song.  Justin and Liam will perform the song during the last 15 minutes; parents may come to this part of the program.  Four weeks later a CD will be available at the library.  For grades 6 thru high school.  Registration, limited to 30, begins Saturday, March 19.    

 

National Library Week:  April 10 -16

 

 

 Paddy Lynn: Color My World

Saturday, April 16:  11 am

     Paddy Lynn’s storyacting program combines the drama of a children’s theatre company with the intimacy of an old-fashioned storyteller.  In Color My World children act out popular children’s books with Paddy. For all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by a parent.  No tickets required. 

 

Mother’s Day Story &Craft

Saturday, May 7:  10 am or 2 pm

    Come to Kids Korner for a special time of story and craft for Mother’s Day. For all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by a parent. Registration begins April 23.

 

May Movie: to be announced

Saturday, May 14:  10 am

     Youth Services will be showing a movie in the Large Meeting Room.  (The title will be announced closer to the showing date.)  For all ages, but preschoolers/kindergarteners must be accompanied by a parent.  Check at the Youth Services Desk for details.  No tickets required.
