Hours and Scheduling
Up to 35 hours a week (full-time), but we are willing to be flexible to accommodate MLS/MLIS student class schedules. Must be available Monday mornings (9-12pm), Tuesday evenings (5-10pm), Wednesday mornings (9-12pm), and one weekend/month. This is a temporary position beginning September 3rd and ending November 27th.

$21.87 per hour

Description
The Elk Grove Village Public Library is looking for an individual who is energetic, creative, and confident in teaching early literacy skills to young children and caregivers. We are looking for an enterprising person who is not afraid to jump right in to plan and lead early childhood classes. This temporary position offers substantial library experience in a supportive and encouraging Youth Services Department.

Key Functions of Position

  • Plan and teach a weekly baby lap-sit storytime.
  • Plan and teach a weekly toddler storytime (presented twice).
  • Facilitate a sensory play program.
  • Teach or co-teach (dependent on language proficiency) a monthly Spanish-English bilingual family program.
  • Readers advisory and reference services for families with children from birth to 8th grade.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children and an ability to connect with children and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of current children’s literature.
  • Previous library storytime experience and knowledge of early childhood development preferred.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Preference will be given to a professional librarian or MLS/MLIS student.

Qualifications
Master’s Degree from an accredited School of Library Science plus three years of professional library experience including supervisory responsibility. Managerial experience with hiring authority preferred. Knowledge of supervisory methods including work delegation, scheduling, evaluating performance, and maintaining morale. Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends.

Essential Responsibilities

As Library Management Team Member

  • Participates with Management Team to achieve the Library’s long term goals, and in the continual assessment of current services, policies, and facilities.
  • Assists the Library Director in the development and advocacy of Adult Services departmental objectives, and serves on various internal library committees.
  • Serves as a Person-In-Charge, and shares responsibility for Library administration with other senior management when Library Director is absent.
  • May be assigned administrative, as well as general responsibilities to assist the Director in overall administration and operation of library activities.

As Adult Services Department Head

  • Ensures accurate, effective, and friendly Programming, Outreach, Reference, and Readers Advisory services through the management of Adult Services staff.
  • Evaluates staffing levels and makes necessary adjustments in light of changing goals, library usage, and community needs.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, reviews, mentors, and motivates the Adult Services team.
  • Supervises the selection of materials related to Reference, fiction, nonfiction, and AV.
  • Pursues opportunities to educate others on the collections, programs, and services the Elk Grove Village Public Library offers.

As Adult Services Librarian

  • Works hours as needed at the Reference desk.
  • Regularly contributes to the Library newsletter and web page.
  • Assists with classes and programs as needed.
