Karl Gates of Karl Gates Appraisals will discuss the history of antiques and collectibles and give tips on what to look for when determining an item’s worth. He has over 30 years of appraisal, lecturing and estate sale experience, including work as an appraiser for the United States Treasury Department. Registered attendees may bring one item (no stamps, coins, or guns) to have appraised.

Babysitter's Training Course

Classes are Saturdays,September 25th and October 2nd.
Classes are limited to 25 and are for ages 10 – 16.
These classes are taught by a certified teacher. Fun activities, small group discussions, role playing and teacher-led discussions allow students to actively participate in class. A nonrefundable fee of $10.00 will be due before the class begins, to cover a student reference book, along with other resource materials. Bus Trip: Chicago Skyscrapers and the "Ledge"

The first skyscraper in the world was Chicago’s Home Insurance Building. Built in 1885, it was all of ten stories tall. Enjoy a day exploring the evolution of skyscrapers in Chicago. Travel to the skydeck of the Western Hemisphere’s tallest building, the Willis Tower (former Sears Tower.) Here you will have the opportunity to step out onto the ledge, a glass box extending out four feet from the building, 103 stories up! The Ledge is comprised of three layers of ½ inch thick glass. Then, see and learn the fascinating history of Chicago’s original skyscrapers such as the 1929 Palmolive Building, which later became Playboy Tower, the telescoping 1930 Board of Trade, and the 1958 Inland Steel Building. Marvel at the city’s more recent architectural wonders like the AON Center, (former Standard Oil Building) which is now America’s fourth tallest building. Also, see Lake Point Tower with its famous residents past and present, the Metropolitan Correctional Center with its “infamous” guests, and the newest member of Chicago’s skyline…the magnificent Trump Tower. Lunch today is at Mity Nice Grill in Water Tower Place, our city’s remarkable retail high rise on Michigan Avenue.
